At the forefront of innovation in training people with autism

Indra is leading the SAVIA R&D+i project, which aims to apply virtual-reality and augmented-reality technologies to the process of training and educating people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

SAVIA (Interactive Virtual Learning System for people with autism and learning difficulties) foresees the development of a single technology platform capable of integrating tools that cover all the necessary educational content for people with ASDs, and which allow different aspects to work together that until now had required various solutions. These include basic learning (large, small, far, near, etc.) and skills for daily life (hygiene, feeding, etc.), concepts such as teamwork and understanding relationships, recognizing emotions and skills such as imagination and play.

The new application, which is technologically accessible and easy to use, offers virtual worlds and controlled environments that are understandable and adaptable, and highly useful for the teaching of autistic individuals. In addition, the solution will be compatible with widely-used interactive platforms such as game consoles, and will take into account the emerging technologies that appear within the project life cycle. Finally, it also foresees the study of the educational and pedagogical needs of professionals working with people with ASDs, the design of content adapted to these needs and the development of several prototypes.

The SAVIA project will permit those living with ASDs and intellectual disabilities to work in a pleasant, controlled and comprehensible environment, and to enhance their skills and develop those that present the most problems, improving their quality of life as much as possible.

Moreover, thanks to this Indra solution, families will have a way to actively help with their children's development. Meanwhile, the professionals who work daily with people with ASDs or intellectual disabilities will find a workspace in which to obtain educational tools with interfaces and contents that are highly configurable and adaptable to each person, and where they can share experiences and new content with other professionals. SAVIA also benefits the general public, since the tools developed within it may be interesting for school-age children due to the concepts it embodies, its educational and social elements and the way it is presented: as a reliable, easy-to-understand, educational game with thoroughly analyzed and tested content.

In line with its Corporate Responsibility strategy and its commitment to accessible technologies, an area in which it has developed over 30 R&D+i projects, Indra is now making its technology available to this project, which falls under the framework of the R&D+i Avanza Competitividad (Competitiveness Advancement) subprogram of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
